The early pre-coding for Dead Island 2 started with Techland, the developers of the original and spin-off title Riptide but "they decided to go do something else," Reichert says. "We wished them the best of luck.Dying Light looks nice." These were the words quoted by Polygon in their recent article with Sebastian Reichert, Deep Silver Creative Producer. Not only were they on the hunt for a new development team but when stumbling upon Yager they had to think long and hard on their choice. Yager was being trusted with creating a new tone that was needed for the Dead Island sequel, some would call it a gamble, considering Spec Ops: The Line was at a completely different end of the spectrum to where Deep Silver and Dead Island lye in the vein of the franchise.

A recent interview with Polygon Reichert had this to say

"We found that out with the trailer for the first game,” That non-gameplay reveal was praised for the powerful, sad story it told in just a few minutes of computer animation. But that gravitas was nowhere to be found in the game itself. "The tone is something we had to address."

For Michael Kempson, Yager Producer, this wasn't a problem. "The thing we learned with Spec Ops was to do the right thing with the right game," Kempson says. "We learned a work ethic and attitude to how we pursue and portray a story in a game."

And all this points to the new delightful, but morbidly stylish trailer "We're not dark and depressing. We're not ridiculous and stupid. We're cool and kick-ass." Say’s Reichert
